3GMiami, a Miami-based education nonprofit made up of grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, Offers Volunteer Classroom Speakers As Part of Holocaust Education Instruction in Miami-Dade Schools
With Antisemitism On The Rise, Grandchildren of Survivors Have Shared Family Stories with More Than 500 Students Students To Educate Through Lessons of the Holocaust
MIAMI, FL - November 2021 —
3GMiami, a Miami-based education nonprofit made up of grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, reached 500 students in their inaugural program visiting schools to educate the next generation on the perils of intolerance through personal Holocaust stories.
Stephanie Rosen and Julie Paresky, 3GMiami co-founders, spoke to students at Coral Reef High School and MAST Academy and shared their grandparents’ stories of persecution and survival from the Holocaust. Rosen recounted her grandparents’ escape from Berlin the night of Kristallnacht, a pogrom often considered the start of the Holocaust, and their harrowing plight from the life and home to which they would never return.
“Sharing my grandparents' story of survival is deeply personal and it keeps their legacy alive. I also feel it’s a privilege and a responsibility to share with students so we can continue to learn from the Holocaust”, said Paresky 3GMiami co-founder and granddaughter of 2 Holocaust Survivors. Many 3Gs feel the same way.
The speakers received highest praise from teachers and students for their “informative” and “heartfelt” presentations, “I think what you are creating through 3GMiami has the potential to change lives and possibly the world. I believe my students will never forget the invaluable lessons you taught them,” said veteran language arts teacher Barbara Quinaz from MAST.
“3GMiami is leading important work to ensure that students continue to learn about the Holocaust through the personal experience of survivors. They are a wonderful resource to enhance classroom Holocaust instruction,” said Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff, Director of the University of Miami Holocaust Teacher Institute and a child survivor of the Holocaust.
3GMiami is currently reaching out to teachers in Miami-Dade schools to offer volunteer classroom speakers as part of their Holocaust education instruction, which is mandated in the state of Florida. Offering testimony from those personally connected to survivors is a meaningful component of Holocaust education and has significant impact on students’ beliefs and actions.
The team of professionally trained speakers from 3GMiami, all grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, share their families’ personal stories and survivor testimony in order to educate children in grades 6-12 about the perils of intolerance. Students can apply the lessons of the Holocaust to their lives today and be upstanders in the face of hatred and bigotry.
Launched in April 2020, 3GMiami continues to build a local network of grandchildren of survivors that can serve as classroom speakers and carry on the legacy of their grandparents. With the rise of antisemitism and discrimination against many groups, 3GMiami hopes that their work and voice can make a meaningful difference in Miami and beyond
